Michael worked with the boys. He prayed Angela would accept the boys’ hard work as precious gifts, even though they weren’t something a refined woman like herself would purchase in a store. They had taken an old hat box of Julie’s and covered it with new fabric. Gluing and pinning the lace around the border had given him fits. His fingers were more punctured than after several days of working with wire fencing. How do women sew with these things?

“Do you think she’ll like it?” Noah asked.

“I’m sure she will.”

“What is she going to do with it?” Samuel scrunched up his nose.

“I imagine she’ll put precious things in there or perhaps a hat.”

“But our hats hang on a peg by the door.” Noah wrinkled his forehead.

“True, but ladies’ hats are more delicate.”

“Why?” Samuel’s innocent question made Michael more aware of how isolated he’d kept the boys since Julie’s death. He needed to change that. He needed to take a trip and visit her parents and perhaps his own.

“God made women more delicate, like a lady’s hat.”

“But why?” Noah leaned back on his elbows. “Female barn animals do as much as the male animals, sometimes more.”

“True, but even there, look at the size of a cow compared to the bull.”

Noah’s eyebrows rose.

Michael continued. “With people, God made it that man would work and provide for his family, but that the woman would help take care of the house, raise the kids, feed us delicious meals, and stuff like that. They are still just as busy, but it’s different work.”

“Can Miss Harris be the woman for our house?”

Michael’s gut twisted. “It doesn’t quite work that way, Son. A man and a woman have to fall in love and know that God has a plan for them to marry. Like your mother and me.”

“But …”

Noah interrupted. “Dad would have to kiss her.”

“Oh.” Samuel pulled his knees up to his chin. “Like Billy kisses the girls at school?”

“Sort of.”

Michael wondered just what Billy was doing in school and why the teacher wasn’t aware of it.

“Dad, I don’t think you ought to chase Miss Harris like Billy does. The girls scream and run away from him.”

Michael chuckled. “Trust me, Son, I’m not going to be chasing Miss Harris for a kiss. And before you get any more foolish ideas in your head, a man can hire someone to come into his home to do the cooking and cleaning. And I’m in a mind to do just that.”

“Can you hire Miss Harris?” Noah beamed. “She cooks real well.”

“I’ll mention it to her, but she has other responsibilities at her home.”

“I like Miss Harris, Dad. I hope she can work for you, too.”

The question was, Did Michael want to hire Miss Harris, given the obvious physical attraction between them? She was too young to be an old maid, so trying to hook her claws into him didn’t figure. But he couldn’t for the life of him think of one good reason why she’d be attracted to him. His beard and his hair were wild and woolly.
